Instead of critiquing my image o’ the day (above) I thought I’d do something different and take you to a site I visit quite often: Photo.net. Once a week, they select a “Photo of the Week” and then they have folks weigh in on the positives and negatives (so to speak) of the image. The idea is to have a real discussion of the merits of the photograph–not just a love fest of “Great image!” comments.
Photo.net’s Photo of the Week is chosen not necessarily because it is the best image of the week…more often, it is chosen for its likelihood to generate some intelligent discussion of what constitutes an interesting and intriguing capture. Photographs picked by “the Elves” on this site have varied from portraits to landscapes to abstracts to wildlife and more–the whole range of genres.
I found this week’s selection to be complex yet simple (no, not a contradiction in photography), with many different elements worth exploring…and it was probably captured directly from the photographer’s own apartment window or balcony. Note also that the picture quality could be that of an iPhone or a small pocket camera–point being that a great camera is not required to make great pictures…it is all about “seeing”.
Your personal reaction might be a bit subdued at first, but don’t be surprised if the image starts to grow on you upon closer inspection. Pay special attention to the comments of those who have already contributed critiques and you’ll certainly learn something about how others “see” photographic images. Do you share some of their observations and sentiments? Do you agree or disagree with their critiques? Did they observe things you missed? How would you critique the image?
So, here we go…click HERE to see “The Last Year’s Snow” by Svetlana Korolyova (2021 update: these links no longer active) on Photo.net’s Photograph of the Week. [You can find the image I am referring to on Google/Pinterest, however.]
