Before the 1992 Olympic Games, I think its safe to say that Barcelona’s beaches were bordering on disgusting…places you didn’t really want to go to hang out let alone swim with floating flotsam and the funky fish, unless you were a junkie.
Some things actually do change for the better.
Now you can take the Metro to within an easy five-minute walk of the sand and sea. The shoreline is kept reasonably clean, the water is oh-so-very-swimmable, and there are even sectors for nude, topless, or standard swimwear, whatever floats your goat.
The coast is also a great place to go for picture-hunting and I especially like the sunrises there when the weather is unstable. If you aren’t a morning person or a tripod photog, though, just try a nice long photo walk with your iPhone or point-and-shoot camera from the Barceloneta area to the Parc/Port Forum, maybe five miles in all.

So, what exactly was this guy up to, you ask? It looked mighty suspicious at first, but then it became obvious. He was actually just making some shade with his big beatiful bod in order to play with his mobile phone (I would “Just say ‘No!’ to crack”, though.):
