The crisis continues, now with Puigdemont under arrest in Germany…and with the possibility of extradition back to Spain (and a free pass directly to jail).
So, what if you just gave independence to everyone who wanted it?
Just to be sure, and because independence is a really big deal, make the threshold 60% of registered voters in a UN-monitored referendum so the result is convincing and not as devisive as a mere majority + 1 (which could actually be less than 50% of registered voters, depending on turn out). Then, if this magic threshold is reached, voilà, independence and an immediate transition into the European Union (if that is desired).
This could apply not only to Catalunya, but to Basque Country, Galicia, even Scotland, Northern Ireland, Flanders-Wallonia, Bavaria, Lombardy…whomever.
And, while we are at it, how about the Kurds and the Québécois!?
Sure, why not?
I know, I know… a million reasons “why not”–very often economic reasons, truth be told, voiced quite loudly by the potential losers left behind by these independence movements. (Read: Madrid, in the case of Catalunya.)
