“If there was wisdom in beards, all goats would be prophets.”
–Armenian proverb
Over 1000 years of history…
This monastery was originally founded in 874. Obviously, over the years, there have been many reconstruction and renovation efforts, most recently and extensively in the 1950s.
Interestingly, the little peninsula on which these structures sits, centuries ago, was originally an island.
As evidenced by all the nearby stalls and kiosks where all manner of tourist souvenirs and trinkets are sold, Sevanavank Monastery is one of the most visited tourist sites in Armenia, being but a long hour’s drive or so from the capital city of Yerevan. The huge lake itself is an added attraction–you can swim (chilly!), boat, fish, rent a jet ski, wind surf… or simply enjoy the view.
Photography Notes
Many times, when with others, the photographer doesn’t get to choose the hour of the outing and so it was in this case–a mid-afternoon visit on a near cloudless day.
In these cases, you do the best you can… minimize the boring sky (or heavily vignette the photo in post!), consider B&W rather than color, focus on details, and so on.
These images were all hand held with the Nikon D850.
The Photographs
Another option for photos with lots of empty, blue and boring sky–fill it with text! Here, I experimented with a little “postcard” for my two friends…
