An overcast sky is like a giant light diffuser and makes for great shooting conditions for different subjects–portraits, flowers, still life arrangements, forest scenes, the rock patterns at the local crag, and so on. The decreased contrast makes it a lot easier to capture the entire dynamic range of the scene without those nasty black (“blocked”) shadows and pure white (“blown out”) highlights.
With a little bit of rain, the colors become more saturated as well.
So, these cloudy, wet conditions of late have had me out and about a bit more…looking at the landscape in a slightly different way than I might when it is under a blanket of snow or under a sunny, summer sky.
Hint for showery conditions: Bring a plastic shower cap to put over your camera when on the tripod. An umbrella (with a friendly assistant attached!) can be very useful, too.
