On my first visit to the Temple of La Sagrada Familia (on this trip to Barcelona) I spent most of the time using lens focal lengths of 14mm to maybe 35mm (full frame). The main basilica, with its long sweeping lines and huge expanse, seemed to call for a relatively wide angle to a super wide angle perspective.
On my second visit to the Temple, though, I left the 70-200 lens on my camera and tried to isolate detail, patterns, and expressions of the unusual light. It’s interesting how differently one “sees” depending on what focal length lens is on the camera.
I do much the same thing on wilderness hikes…I might walk in with the wide angle on the camera, and then return with the telephoto in place.
In some ways, the telephoto look–with its associated compression and the isolation of abstract detail–is one of my favorite ways to work.
What follows are a few images of La Sagrada Familia from the telephoto perspective. First, in color…
Now, In black and white…
Many thanks to Pere Lluch for his help in accessing the Sagrada Familia Temple on this day–Moltes gràcies!
