Yes, sometimes there might be a slight, subliminal, Orwellian message in some of these photographs (as I have mentioned before). This likely seeps into the images from my skepticism of our current human trajectory which tends to marginalize and diminish our necessary connection with the natural world. Human physical, economic, and ecological dominance of the Earth (and each other!) is where it’s at, after all.
Also, though, by way of substitution, I think I subconsciously look upon these massive structures as if they were canyons in the Utah outback (the Maze?)–analyzing and isolating the more unusual compositions of line, curve, form, shape, texture, and light.
Artificial canyons of steel, concrete, brick, and glass…the base elements taken from nature and then reformed and remolded in our image for our purposes…huge, imposing, often impersonal, structures designed specifically to separate us from the natural world (yes, there are sometimes windows, but here they only serve to allow us to admire the building next door).
