Plus, if you scroll to the end of this post, I have thrown in a bonus video (by Ben Wright) of these weird Boulder Creek ice formations so you can see the movement in a much more literal fashion.
The opportunities to photograph these scenes are actually quite fleeting. Late December through February seem to be the best months as it requires very low temperatures for relatively extended periods along with low water levels. A warming trend and/or higher water levels, or even too much snow, will ensure the scenes are quite temporal.
