Well, in our area, at least. In 1987, the 100th Congress designated May as the “Month of Photography”, but I’m happy to throw in March as well.
This month (and on into April), in the Denver-Boulder-Longmont-Fort Collins metro area, you’ll find literally hundreds of shows, activities, and presentations related to our fun and fantastical field of fine photography.
For Denver, the best link is probably this one: Month of Photography. There, you’ll find links to a whole boatload of museums and galleries exhibiting a wide, wide range of photographic works. There is some real cutting edge stuff to be seen–indeed, the standard pretty Colorado landscape designed to match your sofa and living room décor is an endangered species on this list.
For Boulder, try heading out to The Dairy, first. There, you’ll currently find work from six different photographers (Stephen Althouse, Quoleena Sbrocca, Keith Brenner, Michael Wood, Julie DuBose, and Ted Rozumalski), all of it of exceptional quality. I was especially impressed by Stephen Althouse’s huge black and white prints–still life images so detailed, glowing, and life-like you’ll think they are three-dimensional.
The University of Colorado has several exhibits, details of which you can find AT THIS LINK. The one that especially trapped my eyeball (as it relates directly to the theme of censorship which I addressed on Jan 5 and again on Jan 6), is the “REJECTED” show (details at that previous link)…famous works of art that were rejected, or would be rejected today as too demanding of our Puritanical and uneducated sensibilities. I’ll definitely be going to that one.
In Longmont, for some quality photography by various artists, try Julie Cardinal’s new gallery on Main Street called The Dark Room (2019 NOTE: no longer in business).
In Fort Collins, the obvious place to go is the Center for Fine Art Photography.
Finally, Westword has listed Ten Not-To-Be-Missed Shows in March and April.
Have fun!
