Yes, they are called “mammatus clouds” and, yes, that word comes from “mammary”, or “breast-related”…like giant udders in the sky that will eventually leak down upon you–although rain in this case.
We were on the Costa Brava, near l’Escala, to do a sea cliff climb, but these clouds brought with them rain, thunder, and lightning…so it was not to be, and we cancelled the boat ride to the base of the cliff.
With this kind of sky, I would have loved to have been somewhere with a great landscape spread out before me and lots of interesting foreground options nearby. And, I would also have liked to have had my big camera, a variety of lenses, and my solid tripod.
Unfortunately, I was in an urban area with nothing but an iPhone. So, you do what you can with what you have.
