Today was an historic day for the ranch–the last seven horses departed permanently for other pastures. Now, for the first time in nearly sixty years, no horses graze on the mountain, push around their grain buckets complainingly, nicker at one another, or roll in the grass at Joder Arabian Ranch (JAR).
On this hot, lazy day, hazy from nearby forest fires, the horses carried their riders over the City of Boulder’s Boulder Valley Ranch Open Space trails to their new home a few miles away at Jan’s La Rienda Ranch.
A big thanks to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office who sent three of their Animal Control officers to help with the crossing of the potentially crazy busy Highway 36 (Animal Control…how appropriate, maybe!?)
The ride went well–although as bittersweet as a goodbye kiss–and the horses are now working out their pecking order at their new digs.
The non-profit, Rocky Mountain Equi-Rhythm (RMER), will now continue their wonderful work at some place other than JAR–their summer camps for kids, equine-assisted therapy, basic riding instruction, grad student equine-therapy practicums, and so on.
There were few dry human eyes as the horses and riders crossed under the JAR sign on their way out (at least the horses were well composed).

Our son started riding at Joder when he was four–34years ago. This brings tears to my eyes
Thanks for the beautiful comment, Carole. How many kids got their start here, I wonder? Those are the many ripples on the pond that continue to radiate outward all over the world.
We spent many wonderful years at JAR. Ellie and Bob provided a wonderful place for young people to grow up, surrounded by beauty, lovely equine friends, and an amazing place to interact with humans of all ages. Stephanie and i talk about Joder’s frequently. Thanks, Dan, for writing such a tender piece about this transition for JAR.
Thanks, Nancy! We are trying to get a Facebook page up so folks can have one place to go to see and add pictures, video and comments. Look for a Joder Arabian Ranch page on facebook soon.
Beautiful photos and story. I will miss everything about this wonderful place.
Thanks, Sandi…and I assume you’ll be riding out here tomorrow!
What a beautifully written story of this historic event. No dry eyes here either. Very bittersweet. The land will always be there and also the spirit of the Joder Family and all those who love the land and horses. May the good spirit of the Joder Arabian Ranch stay with the land forever and ever. My heart will always be there, too.
Much love,
Beverly Joder Collier,
Tucson, Arizona
Thanks for the beautiful words! We’ll save a piece of the barn for you!
