“Despite the forecast, live like it’s spring.”
—Lily Pulitzer, 1931-2013
Astronomically speaking, we are now two days into summer.
So, what visuals were hanging out in my iPhone from this past spring? What random photos were collecting figurative dust in its unthinking memory?
Lets take a look…
If in B&W, they were mostly processed through Nik Silver Efex. If in color, I used Nik Color Efex.
In Monochrome
Some folks around here joke that there exists a “Mediterranean gene”. That is, a gene in men who have ancestral roots along the Mediterranean coast that has them going prematurely bald…
“Death is Life”? Without death, there is no life… without sorrow, no joy… no ugliness, no beauty… Is that the idea?
Ideal urban transportation in Barcelona–and ideal for combat parking within the city…
They cut back the trees each season and, in spring, they start to revive… relive… come to life again and reach for the sky…
Who is moved to photograph the backside of a sculpture? Me, when the light is right…
Celebrating Catalunya, and a modern scultpure by Jaume Plensa at La Pedrera (Casa Milà)…
The “tough game” could be on the court with the ball, or simply Life itself…
Now silent; can no longer speak of the many years that have passed, muted by the elements…
Almost camouflaged among all the reflections, shapes, forms, and angles, a lone human…
A quiet moment in an inner courtyard. There are human beans who actually still read…
Game over, and left behind. But were they playing basketball with a soccer ball, or soccer on the basketball court?
With every new scientific article that comes out, it seems that the news about climate change is worse than initially projected… permafrost thaw, ocean acidification, continued use of fossil fuels, Greenland and Antarctica subsurface glacier melt, disappearing Arctic sea ice and the resulting warming feedback loop, ocean current changes due to rising water temperatures, and so on. I personally don’t have much hope for us human beans (although, like the almighty cockroach, a number will surely survive) and I suspect we are already well past the tipping point. The Earth will be fine, of course, she will shrug, readjust, rebalance, and move on. It would be nice, though, if we–and our descendents (like this little girl)–could be sustainably part of the new ecosystem…
I could never understand why folks learn generally not to litter, yet throwing a cigarette butt on the ground is still acceptable to those same people. Isn’t a butt considered litter, too? Apparently not. I guess most don’t know that many of these butts are made of a type of plastic and contain a plethora of disgusting toxins that will slowly seep into the ground. So, if you have to smoke ’em in the first place, please dispose of the sucked end properly…
Possibly one for my Ghost Women portfolio… True Love Is [Indeed] A Big Deal…
Some shadow play…
In Color
This is an ad for a dental office. If I were a person of color, I wouldn’t see much in this that would be particularly inviting…
Installed in 1956, this giant thermometer stands at Portal de l’Àngel, 40, near Plaça Catalunya, and was just recently unveiled after a several year renovation. Glad to see it back…
I liked the color palette and the message–WEIRDO!–as well as the fencing keeping WEIRDO at bay…
Looking down on the Med metropolis from above. That little red plane is a Barcelona icon at the mountain top old-timey amusement park of Tibidabo and goes around in circles by the thrust from its own propeller–no gear motor is used. It has had a number of renovations over its more than 90-year life span. Lots of memories for many a Barcelona kid over the decades…
A recent addition to Barcelona’s parks and green spaces, a vertical garden on the side of a building at the Fira de Barcelona (Montjuic). How big will those trees eventually get? I have to assume they have thought that through already…
A particularly grungy graffiti wall in the rapidly gentrifying barrio known as El Raval…
I think it is the residence of some very creative peaceniks, and not an actual museum per se. Although, you could say that the facade is a museum unto itself…
It just means you need to pay to park here. But I liked the color, the lines, and the shadows…
An amazing mural that went up a couple of years ago in the Gothic neighborhood. Gotta love the contrast between the two faces…
A book shop, closed for siesta, sports some really heart-warming colors…
Some nice mosaic work at a ticket booth at the Palau de la Música…
They’re lookin’ at ya! More urban art at the Foixarda tunnel atop Montjuic…
The “anti-repression solidarity concert” poster helped make this one work a bit better…
Look around you. Do a quick survey of the number of folks who are interacting with 1s and 0s rather than the natural world. My only condolence is that they are–hopefully!–communicating with their friends and loved ones (and not consuming stupid conspiracy theories, watching porn, or sexting)…
Home-made. Pretty dern mouth-watering, with real artichoke hearts, too…
