A stitch from three images–it’s so easy to do in Photoshop (or many other photo-editing programs). And it instantly turns my camera into a medium/large-format machine.
In the example below, you can’t really see the whole glory on the screen of a computer or mobile phone as this is a sized-for-web image but, with 36 megapixels available for each frame, this one could easily be printed five feet long by a foot and a half tall at 300 ppi without any “up-resing” required. You could even go larger if viewing distance is farther back.
Imagine what you could do if you were to, say, stitch two rows of ten images each with a 36 to 50 MP camera! We’re talking billboard here! You’ll just need some pretty hefty computing power to keep your desktop from choking to death on all the ones and zeros.
Alternatively, if your older camera is a mere 6 or 12 MPs, you can effectively increase its resolution up to and beyond current standards with this technique. Just Google “How to stitch panorama images” and you’ll find buckets of info on the different software available as well as how to capture the images most effectively in the field in the first place.
