Dreams and Dreaming…
Do you remember your dreams?
Do you have nightmares, or do you have pleasant, enjoyable dreams? Or both?
What are they telling you? At least, what do you THINK they are telling you? Do they tell us anything at all?
Personally, I think they do and there are a number of folks who would agree.
I’m not sure if this is true, but I think I read somewhere that there is a culture (Africa, perhaps?) that uses different verb tenses when referring to a dream story as opposed to a “real world” story–this way, listeners will know in which world the action is taking place. But which world is truly real, then? Both? At least among these people, the dream world apparently carries as much weight as so-called earthly reality.
An interesting point to ponder…
My dreams fade… but where do they go?
In my case, I rarely remember my dreams. I only remember them if I wake up and immediately make a determined effort to commit the details to memory (or to paper), or if I am able to immediately relate the dream to someone orally. Typically, though, within minutes (if not seconds) of awakening, my dream world whirls and swirls into progressively more diffuse patterns of light , then disappears altogether. (I’m not quite sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing for the overall condition of my psyche.)
So, when I found the following images on my iPhone–inadvertently made, I must confess–I quickly made the connection to my very diffuse, nearly always invisible dream world. Note that in only one picture is there anything recognizable: a piece of a mysterious apartment building.
Was it really an accident that these images showed up in my phone’s camera?
Another point of debate… Should “inadvertent” photographs have less value than intentionally-made photos? Does it matter how a photograph is made, assuming one is able to construct a narrative to unite, define, and explain the image–an unusually brilliant “artist statement”, if you will?
Is a photograph about the technical content, or is it more about what the viewer actually sees or feels?
Inquiring and dented minds want to know!
