I have the camera packed up and ready to ship to Nikon. Hopefully, the diagonal line issue can be repaired at no cost as it was obviously that way when I received it (my very first D800 image files from last August and the metadata prove that). We’ll see how it goes.
Above is the current state of the sensor, by the way–extremely dirty after our Barcelona trip, no? I have no worries about all those dust spots as they can easily be cleaned–although I have never seen a sensor quite as dirty, and I am fairly careful about how I change lenses (and, no, I haven’t taken it on a dusty African safari!).
My main concern, as it always has been, is that strange diagonal stripe in the top right corner which is a pain to fix in Photoshop in my high contrast, black and white images.
Update to come once the verdict is in from Nikon.

Hi Daniel,
I recently obtained a used D800 and have noticed the same strange “spots”, as in near perfect circular grey dots, on my D800’s sensor, as well as my D600’s sensor. I don’t think they are smudges. You can see half of a spot in the lower right on your sensor image. I don’t think that could be a smudge. But……..what are they? My best guess is a tiny droplet of shutter lube that has spread out over time. A blower or dry cleaner has no effect on them from my experience, but does a wet cleaner remove them? Did Nikon successfully clean your sensor or replace it?
Just sent you an email, Kim! DanJ
