If you didn’t get a chance to get out and about to visit the Boulder artists this past weekend, fear not, Open Studios will continue next weekend (Oct 12-13), both days from noon to 6p.m.. Go to the official Open Arts website for all the details, where to get a map, links to the artists, etc.
In the interests of a summary specifically for the photographically inclined, here is a list of the photographers you can visit along with a few of my own comments (Boulder has some serious talent!):
David Bahr – This guy has done it all, from mountains to music performance to high level academics…a climber, adventure traveler, extreme skier, cyclist, kayaker, you name it. David’s landscapes and nature images are superb, but what I really like are his very creative abstracts–don’t miss those! For a preview, see David Bahr Images.
Dan Baumbach – Dan got his start photographing on the streets of New York, then went into advertising and fashion. Now he has turned to landscape and nature and his images are stunning–so much so that I actually purchased one myself through the Photography for a Change website. See Dan Baumbach Photography.
Chris Brown – Chris has over four decades of experience in the wilderness and his beautiful images are testimony for his love and sensitivity to it whether it be the Grand Canyon, Alaska, or La Barranca del Cobre. Seeing his large, gorgeous prints in person is a real treat. See Chris Brown Photography.
Robert Carmichael – He says “creative vision in any environment” and Robert certainly succeeds…portraits, fashion, concerts, commercial and advertising, landscapes, sports, architecture–he does it all and very, very well. He is also a very accomplished videographer with an Emmy Award (Football in America) and an Academy Award nomination (Fall Line)! Check him out at Carmichael Productions, Inc.
Maryln Cheshes – Although she might be known more for her sculpture or perhaps her painting, Maryln’s photographic images are striking as well in sort of a dreamy, other-worldly, nostalgic sort of way. It is very interesting to see how someone trained first in other artistic mediums approaches photography–it isn’t about the camera, it’s the vision!
Karen Dombrowski-Sobel – Another Boulder artist with a Tucson connection (like me)! I find Karen’s “painted photographs” to be exquisite. See her work on her website, Karen Dombrowski-Sobel, Environmental Fine Art Photography.
Tim Gillespie – Expert in IT and web development, photographer and videographer–and guitar. Tim’s excellent wildlife and nature images can be perused at his website, The Flatirons.
Shawn Heinrichs – Specializing in marine videography and photography, Shawn’s work is beautiful, inspiring and has as its goal the preservation of the world’s oceans and marine life. I especially recommend you view some of the sample videos at his website, Blue Sphere Media. (Try that first Demo Reel, under Video – Oceans, “Oceans, Part 1“.)
Russell McDougal – Russell’s expertise is the art and science of lighting, whether in his studio or out on location. Although he does a lot of commercial work, portraits, architecture, etc. the two areas that really caught my eye on his website, Russell McDougal Photography, were his “Digital and Creative Ideas” and his “Photo-Graphic Illustrations”.
Steve O’Bryan – Steve focuses mostly on Colorado mountain and nature photography. You can peruse his excellent images at his website, Wild Basin Photography.
Tim Reese – He shoots nature, people, weddings…but, for me, his digital composites (montages as he calls them) and his musician portraits are the most compelling and inspiring. See his PhotoMotion website for his work.
Joanie Simon – Joanie specializes in “portraits, still life, nature, abstracts, urban oddities, events (no weddings!), and landscapes”, but I think she really comes into her own when she focuses in on a small, interesting detail that catches her eye, as you can see in her “Abstracts” gallery. See her work at Joanie Simon, Photographer
John Van de Grift – As a former pilot, Jon’s work is near and dear to my aviator heart. His focus is the spectacular weather we have on this planet, often from an aerial perspective (from high in the mountains, or from aircraft). Peruse his unusual work at his website, ATMOSPHERE.
John Weller – A writer, photographer, and film maker, John may be best known for his extensive work in the Great Sand Dunes National Park, although he is now working on a major project in Antarctica (The Ross Sea). See what he is up to at John Weller Photography.
