Surprise!
So, they were digging up the earth along a main artery–Avinguda Diagonal–in downtown Barcelona, the eventual objective being to improve traffic flow along this heavily used avenue.
Then the excavator crunched into some very pretty tiled walls. Call in the archaeology posse!
It turns out these structures aren’t particularly old–19th century–and likely served as storage cellars for who knows what… maybe liquid products? …maybe perishable items? …maybe they were simply underground cellars for houses that used to be here?
I assume the complete story will eventually come out within a few weeks. When I find out more, I’ll update this post.
For now, you can stroll by the Diagonal and Girona intersection and peer through the fence at the folks clearing, cleaning, and documenting the site. The sea side (south side) of Avinguda Diagonal offers the best views for the archaeological rubbernecker.

What a cool job to have–investigating archaeological finds. Note that some of the tiles toward the right, in the smaller space, have numbers within little circles. Could that mean they will be removing these ruins and reconstructing them elsewhere?
