“Preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.”
Earth as a basketball?
As seen from the Moon, our Earth is a beautiful blue-green jewel hovering far away in the hostile vacuum and blackness of space. (Have you not seen the famous “Blue Marble” image?)
From that distance, our atmosphere is but a paper-thin layer surrounding our wonderful orb, but it is that gossamer layer of nitrogen, oxygen, and other gases (alas, increasingly CO2) which gives us, the plants, the fish, the birds, the animals… Life.
To give some perspective… if the Earth were a basketball, the atmosphere would extend out from the ball’s surface roughly a distance equal to five pennies stacked atop one another (about 1/4 of an inch). That’s not much, Mildred.
So, how about we take care of it, eh?
The Poster

Beautiful skies in Argentina. I lived in Peru at 14,500 feet elevation as a child. Very fond memories. Thank you! I posted to FaceBook.
That’s quite a high elevation! I wonder if it has had a positive effect on your ability to return to altitude in later years??? Peru is a beautiful country as well. Thank you for visiting and for your comment, Elizabeth.
