In 2013, I hereby resolve to…
1) Pay close attention to what really attracts my eye when I shoot–and zoom in on that!
2) Enjoy the present moment wherever I’m shooting regardless of whether any good images come out of it or not.
3) Attend at least two photography workshops–one for seeing/shooting and one for post-processing.
4) Learn or perfect a skill that I lack–like portrait lighting, for instance.
5) Attend all meetings of the Flatirons Photo Club, Colorado Nature Camera Club and the Digital Study Group–that’s six hours of nearly free (dues is cheap!) instruction per month (not to mention the fun social aspect of it all).
6) Double-check my settings every time before I begin to shoot–especially VR on or off, ISO and exposure compensation. (I hate that when I shoot wonderful, static, well-lit landscapes at ISO 1600…or when I leave the VR on when shooting from the tripod.)
7) Clean my camera and lenses more often.
8) Buy a really, really great tripod and ballhead–of sufficiently good quality so as to be my last.
9) Cull my images from each shoot much more vigorously.
10) Purge my files from previous years of all the crappy images I’ll never look at again.
11) Back up all of my 2012 best images onto a separate drive and onto DVDs.
12) Employ more care and patience in my post-processing.
13) Do a complete review of my system–calibrate lenses, calibrate monitor, check printer profiles and settings.
14) Master the art of printing B&W images to 13×19 and larger to what I consider an excellent level (“outstanding” will likely take another ten years or so).
15) Play around more with my iPhone camera!
