“[Trump] used to tell me, ‘It doesn’t matter what you say, Stephanie–say it enough and people will believe you.'”
—Stephanie Grisham, former Trump White House Press Secretary
“…this was inspired by the principle – which is quite true within itself – that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods.”
—Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf, Chapter 10
Who should I vote for in November, 2024?
Do you identify as a conservative? An evangelical? A classic Republican? A MAGA Republican? A Libertarian? Or maybe you are just a wandering soul looking to confirm your likely decision to vote for Donald Trump in November?
Well, look no further!
I have checked up on a few right-wing kind o’ folks (YOUR kind o’ folks!) whose names you almost certainly recognize to see what they think.
Before casting your ballot, perhaps you might consider their opinion???
Some conservative big names… on Trump
George W. Bush – Most definitely a conservative and a Republican. He was the 43rd President (2001-2009) and Governor of Texas (1995-2000).
Although Bush seems to be holding fast to the tradition of not finding fault with current and former Presidents, he has certainly criticized Trump and the MAGA movement obliquely. For example: “In the weeks and months following the 9/11 attacks, I was proud to lead an amazing, resilient, united people. When it comes to the unity of America, those days seem distant from our own. A malign force seems at work in our common life that turns every disagreement into an argument, and every argument into a clash of cultures. So much of our politics has become a naked appeal to anger, fear and resentment. That leaves us worried about our nation and our future together.”
Dick Cheney – This guy’s conservative credentials are a galaxy beyond reproach (he is pretty much universally hated by liberals, dontcha know). He served as Vice-President under George W. Bush (2001-2009), White House Chief of Staff under Gerald Ford, as a U.S. Representative (WY, 1979-1989), and as Secretary of Defense under George H.W. Bush.
His key comments: “In our nation’s 236-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump… He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him… He is a coward. A real man wouldn’t lie to his supporters. He lost his election, and he lost big. I know it, he knows it, and deep down I think most Republicans know it.”
And just recently: “He [Trump] tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him. He can never be trusted with power again. As citizens, we each have a duty to put country above partisanship to defend our constitution. That is why I will be casting my vote for Vice-President Kamala Harris.” (NOTE: His daughter, Liz Cheney, a chip off the old very conservative blockhead, will also be voting for Harris this cycle.)
Mike Pence – He was Trump’s very religious and very conservative Vice-President (2017-2021), a Governor of Indiana (2013-2017), and served in the U.S. House of Representatives (IN, 2001-2013).
He has said he will not be endorsing Trump. Imagine that! Your own Veep won’t even support you! That’s a heckuva thing, eh?
Some of Pence’s comments: “I believe that anyone who puts themselves over the constitution should never be president of the United States. And anyone who asked someone else to put them over the constitution should never be president of the United States again.”
And: “It should come as no surprise that I will not be endorsing Donald Trump this year.”
Melania Trump – Trump’s third wife and his junior by 24 years. You know, the one he cheated on with a porn star. When was the last time you saw her “standing by her man” at his political rallies? Why isn’t she out campaigning with him, holding his hand, making speeches on his behalf? Kissing babies? Thank God the GOP is the Party of “family values”, eh!? I’ve no idea who she really supports for Prez this election… who knows which candidate she will actually bubble in on that secret mail-in ballot… hmmmm.
John Bolton – He was Ronald Reagan’s Assistant Attorney General (1985-1989), the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (2005-2006), and served as Trump’s National Security Advisor (2018-2019).
He has said, “I think if you look at what Trump did in his first term… you can extrapolate from that what a second term will be like, and basically it will be the same except worse… All of the things that he did that rendered his presidency dangerous then are going to be even more pronounced in the second term.
And: “…since he has no philosophy and he doesn’t do policymaking in any coherent sense as we understand it. It will be another random walk for America and very, very dangerous.”
And: “[He] cares almost exclusively about his own interests despite the burdens of the Oval Office.”
And: “Trump generally had only two intelligence briefings per week, and in most of those, he spoke at greater length than the briefers, often on matters completely unrelated to the subjects at hand.”
John Kelly – A retired US Marine Corps general and a political advisor, he served as Trump’s Chief of Staff (2017-2019) and had previously served as Trump’s Secretary of Homeland Security (Jan-Jul, 2017).
He has said all of the following on the record: “What can I add that has not already been said? A person that thinks those who defend their country in uniform, or are shot down or seriously wounded in combat, or spend years being tortured as POWs are all ‘suckers’ because ‘there is nothing in it for them.’ A person that did not want to be seen in the presence of military amputees because ‘it doesn’t look good for me.’ A person who demonstrated open contempt for a Gold Star family – for all Gold Star families – on TV during the 2016 campaign, and rants that our most precious heroes who gave their lives in America’s defense are ‘losers’ and wouldn’t visit their graves in France…
A person that has no idea what America stands for and has no idea what America is all about.
A person who cavalierly suggests that a selfless warrior [General Mark Milley] who has served his country for 40 years in peacetime and war should lose his life for treason – in expectation that someone will take action. A person who admires autocrats and murderous dictators. A person that has nothing but contempt for our democratic institutions, our Constitution, and the rule of law.
“There is nothing more that can be said. God help us.”
Ty Cobb – A key member of Trump’s White House legal team (July 2017 through May 2018).
On Erin Burnett’s show, he said,“I think you have to take Trump seriously, because he poses the gravest threat to democracy that we’ve ever seen.”
Stephanie Grisham – She was Trump’s Press Secretary and Communications Director (July 2019 to April 2020), also serving as Chief of Staff and Press Secretary for Melania Trump (2020-2021).
Surprisingly, she spoke at the Democratic Party National Convention where she endorsed the Harris/Waltz ticket, saying of Trump that he has “no morals and no fidelity to the truth” and that, behind closed doors, he calls his supporters “basement-dwellers.”
Michael Cohen – Trump’s personal lawyer and “fixer” from 2006 to 2018.
“I know where the skeletons are buried because I was the one who buried them.”
“I stiffed contractors on his behalf, ripped off his business partners, lied to his wife Melania to hide his sexual infidelities, and bullied and screamed at anyone who threatened Trump’s path to power.”
“But loyalty to Trump means the willingness to do things you know to be wrong and that are harming others.”
J. Michael Luttig – Judge and influential conservative legal figure; United States 4th Circuit (1991-2006).
He has called Trump “a clear and present danger to American democracy.”
MAGA Granny (Pam Hemphill) – Former MAGA supporter, participated in the J6 insurrection, eventually serving 60 days in jail for her actions. Now actively supporting the Harris-Walz ticket.
Over 230 former high-level GOP staffers. From the Salon article… “Over 230 Republicans who worked for former President George W. Bush, Sen. Mitt Romney and the late Sen. John McCain have endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, warning in a letter that a second Donald Trump presidency would be an ‘untenable’ threat to American and the world… We reunite today, joined by new George H.W. Bush alumni, to reinforce our 2020 statements and, for the first time, jointly declare that we’re voting for Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz this November.”
So, I guess all these folks (and many, many others as listed here) have been co-opted by the “deep state”, right?
And if you are tempted to call all of the above folks “RINOs“, then I guess being a “Republican” these days now means being “MAGA/Trump” and no longer has anything at all to do with conservative philosophy or policies. (Dick Cheney a RINO! Give me an effin’ break!)
One final thought… Chicken? Or platter of shit with broken glass?
David Sedaris is a hilarious writer. Here is his take on so-called “undecided voters” (which, really, is also a sideways commentary on anyone contemplating a GOP vote this cycle):
“I look at these people and can’t quite believe that they exist. Are they professional actors? I wonder. Or are they simply laymen who want a lot of attention? To put them in perspective, I think of being on an airplane. The flight attendant comes down the aisle with her food cart and, eventually, parks it beside my seat. “Can I interest you in the chicken?” she asks. “Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it? To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked.”
Comment
Brilliantly stated and compiled. I also question America’s education system that has brought so many people to ask “how is the chicken cooked?”
