I know of people who believe that the Earth was created some 6,000 years ago and they believe one or the other or both of the literal stories in Genesis.
It is difficult for me to comprehend the tremendous amount of faith this must require to ignore the mountain of logical scientific evidence (an ever-growing mountain, at that) that is staring us all in the face every day.
And such cerebral contortion-distortions aren’t even necessary. Many people who believe in a Higher Power have had no problem incorporating a deity into a comprehensive plan of the universe that also accepts scientific discovery and evidence. (Heck, even the Catholic Church accepts the Theory of Evolution!)
Here’s my take: A deity that creates a la Genesis is really quite small and petty; a very human projection…sort of a mythological doll maker. On the other hand, a deity (or a “something-greater-than-us-but-we-can’t-really-conceive-of-what-it-is”) that is behind the incredibly complex and miraculous world we see through both spiritual and scientific eyes–well, that, my friend, is indeed a Higher Power.
From Albert Einstein:
“Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind.”
And…
“The further the spiritual evolution of mankind advances, the more certain it seems to me that the path to genuine religiosity does not lie through the fear of life, and the fear of death, and blind faith, but through striving after rational knowledge.”
